TAVAIR

I met Tavair at Monument City Brewing while I was shooting a music video for Jesse Moody. We smoked up outside the venue and shared our common battle with having left heavily influential religious communities. We bonded, laughed, and started a great friendship.

This shoot was early on in my process of gathering tattoo portraits for the series. So, I was pretty new to plotting and planning. I showed up at Tavair’s apartment and loved the wall of guitars, posters, and art. However, the way the furniture was situated, I began shooting along the side of the wall with the kitchen in the background. I shot way too many photos because I really didn’t know what I was doing.

I shot so much, that the battery on my off camera flash died. I wasn’t in love with what I got, but figured it was time to call it quits. We ordered some Chinese food and as I sat down on the floor across from Tavair, I looked up and said, “Duh, this is the shot.” Thankfully I had some juice left in my own-camera flash and managed to capture my favorite of the series.
