Breakdancing at Artscape, Earth at Night, and Athletes Serving Athletes
FAVE PHOTO: Breakdancing at Artscape
This summer breakdancing was on the world stage at the Olympics in Paris. Sadly, the focus became the Australian woman who was out of place in the competition. Meanwhile, back in Baltimore, at our annual Artscape (the largest free arts festival in the country) the breakdancing competition was lit. It was an amazing display of talent, skill, athleticism, and art.
One of my favorite things to capture when shooting documentary style photography is the reactions of what’s happening. This photo above caught the judges reaction to one of many amazing performances. Below are some glimpses of the dancers and more reactions. A fun twist to the event was the massive rain storm that came bursting through towards the end of the battles. I felt lucky to be ”stuck” under the tented dance floor during the chaotic weather.
Sidenote, if you want to see what the Olympic dancers had to offer, here’s the gold medal round for both the men and the women. Please share with your friends when they mock breakdancing at the Olympics. These folks far outweigh the Australian dancer’s rough routine.

Sometimes I’m just in the mood to watch something beautiful and not think too much. Using incredibly powerful cameras, this documentary series captures what animals are doing at night. They use the moonlight to help shoot video at super high quality and as though it were daylight. A slew of interesting stories are told about animals in their habitat searching for food and basic survival. There’s a mixture of fun, adventure, love, and drama to keep your attention.
At the end of each episode they interview the camera crew to explain the amount of work that goes into following the nighttime activities of these incredible creatures. As a filmmaker, I’m mesmerized by their tenacity and time dedicated to getting the footage. This behind-the-scenes element to the series is exactly the type of work I love to do.
VIDEO PROJECT: Athletes Serving Athletes
I have been working with Athletes Serving Athletes for 15 years. Recently I found one of our earliest videos back when the founder started with just one student. The organization has grown and changed to become such a huge part of families’ lives. It’s an impressive community of people who put others’ needs ahead of their own. It takes a village.
This latest project highlights three families, showcasing what happens beyond race day. It truly is a privilege to enter their homes and their inner-lives to hear what makes a difference in their day-to-day living. Through the bonds created in this community of friends running alongside their children, a wonderful connection happens.
Have you ever had the chance to make someone’s day? I have a friend who often models to me what that looks like on a regular basis. Giving someone a helping hand, offering a genuine compliment, speaking up on someone else’s behalf, these are tools for making the world a more beautiful place. It’s what drives me to making documentaries about people and organizations that are aiming to do that.
